We aren’t supposed to judge a book by it’s cover, but the 2013 eCommerce Packaging Survey conducted by DotCom Distribution says retailers may be failing to meet consumer expectations when it comes time to deliver their purchases.

Product packaging and brand marketing

The U.S. survey reveals that investing in “premium” packaging can yield big rewards in terms of customer loyalty and satisfaction.

Some highlights:

  • Nine out of 10 consumers have re-used a bag or box from a retailer, making 90 percent of shoppers into extensions of your brand-marketing efforts.
  • 35 percent of those surveyed discovered a brand for the first time after seeing that company’s bag or box in a public setting
  • 52 percent of customers are likely to make a second purchase from an online retailer that uses premium packaging
  • Nearly one in four consumers would be likely to share a photograph of an online order that arrives in an attractive or gift-like box on social media—and 88 percent of consumers ages 18-25 actively share images of packaging on Facebook.

What is premium packaging? Any box or bag that includes pleasing design elements, like logos, or color photography, and a box or bag that can be reused multiple times based on its high-quality materials.
